A Lesson in Humility

Y'know, sometimes, you wander down life's little paths, thinking you're a good person, and most of what you do for other people, you do for them, not for your own gratification. Then something slaps you upside the head and tells you different. I mean, you give your support to people, telling them you don't want anything in return, but then, you realize that deep down, there is a little payback expected, or not even that, but you're not being completely altruistic. It takes you a bit to reset your expectations of yourself, and to deal with what you've done to others. Part of the problem with that is that things you've done that really were selfless, or things you were going to do, are now suspect. It takes a lot of shoveling to dig out of that hole...

  1. unless you have help shoveling, that is...

    but then again...

if you are in a hole, you shouldn't need to shovel to get out, it would seem to me to be a matter of climbing, which strikes me as the type of thing that is far less time and energy consuming than digging....

unless of course you are buried, but then, you wouldn't be in a hole, as the "hole" would have been filled in.....

    and yet again....

i can't honestly think of a time when a hole needs to be dug out of. as a matter of fact, a hole is usually dug with the intention to create something new. if you are stuck in a hole, stop shoveling and start building. i've never heard of shoveling OUT of a hole, it seems if you continue to dig, you will only get in deeper.but if you start to build, you bridge the gap.

    or.....

maybe the foundation of something great was weak or decaying anyways, and a demo crew came along and knocked it in, rather than waiting for it to cave. these things happen with time, it's not about starting over, it's about salvaging as much as is possible after the weight of the world has trampled upon said greatness for years, even the strongest of structures are compromised over time, it's the organic experience.

    just as....

all things decay.....turn the soil and use them for fertilizer instead of tossing them in the yard refuse bin for the garbage men. that way you always have fresh top soil. put your hands in the dirt with only good intention and nurture with authenticity. the seasons may change, but with care, your garden will be as strong and nourishing to you as you are to it....and don't forget, you always dig a little hole to plant a seed....and the seedling always pushes it's way back through the soil toward love.
